Scripture Union Daily Guide 15th August 2025 Outline
The Sadducees are said to have descended from Zadok, the High Priest who remained faithful to King David and continued to the time of Solomon (1 Chronicles 29:22). Their official responsibilities included the day-to-day maintenance of the Temple. Many of their members served on the Great Sanhedrin, which was the Supreme Court of the country. They were rivals to the Pharisees, with whom they rarely agreed on the interpretation of the Law.
In God’s progressive revelation to the people of Israel, the concept of the afterlife was not explicit in the Law given through Moses but only a later development. Believing strictly in the letter of the Law, these sad Sadducees denied the concept of any possible resurrection from the dead. Jesus had silenced the Pharisees; but they felt they were in a superior position. They sought to bring Jesus to ridicule, along with the Pharisees, using the unlikely, extreme scenario of their question. Jesus turned the tables on them by exposing their ignorance on two levels (see Matthew 22:29). Is the God they worshipped as the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob a God of the dead or of the living?
And So
